I'm trying to access a webpage in Internet Explorer 6 and I keep getting the following error:

Error 501/505: Not Implemented or Not Supported

I've spoken to colleagues who say they are able to access the page just fine. Is this error related to my browser or the web page?

The answer is both. It could be that the website is not setup to support the HTTP 1.1 protocol. It could also be that the website is hosted on an Apache server that has a mod_security feature enabled that is preventing certain URL's from being accessed in certain ways.

That probably sounds a bit cryptic. In a nutshell, you can try the following to resolve the 501 or 505 error and access your web page:

    • Upgrade your web browser (to the latest version of Internet Explorer (8 at the time of this writing), or to Mozilla Firefox)
    • Change your IE settings as follows: Browse to Internet Options > Tools > Advanced. Uncheck the HTTP 1.1 box.
    • Try loading your web page again (refresh using the F5 key). If you're still getting the Error 501/505: Not Implemented or Not Supported error, browse to Internet Options > Tools > Advanced. Uncheck the "Show friendly HTTP error messages" box. You should not get a more descriptive error message that may give you details into which application on your PC is causing the problem.

If it turns out that a particular application is causing this error message - get in touch with the manufacturer and see if an update/ fix is available.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.
