I'm using the open source 7-zip to unpack all my compressed files (.zip, .tar, etc.), and it works great. However, I can't seem to create a compressed file successfully. Whenever I try and add files, I get the "operation not supported" error.

Any ideas how to create a .tar, more specifically .tar.gz, compressed file in 7-zip?

I had this same problem a while back. For some reason, you need to launch the 7-zip File Manager (7zFM.exe) from scratch via Start > Run in order to create a compressed file, and add files to it.

Once you've loaded it up, browse and select files and hit the "Add" button. A compression menu will pop-up. Choose "tar" as the compression. Then, run 7-zip again. This time, add the .tar file you just created. When the compression menu pops up, select "gz" (gZip) as compression. The result will be a tar.gz file
