I'm about to give the MS Office 2010 Beta test a try on my machine. I've got a 64-bit processor and typically prefer installing 64-bit applications for increased performance.

My question is - how do I find the 64-bit Office 2010 installer, and is it worth installing over the 32-bit version? I ask this because I had installed Shiretoko - a 64-bit version of Firefox, and while it ran great, it wouldn't load any Flash applications since the Flash player is currently only available in 32-bit format.

I would run the 32-bit Office Installer. If you use the click-to-run installer (streaming/ virtualization - it installs Office 2010 in the background so you can begin using it immediately) it will install 32-bit by default.

The reason I say this is two-fold:

    • The only real advantage to 64-bit native office apps is for those running large files (Excel files > 2GB)
    • Intel processors using MMX use a graphics technology that is optimized for 32-bit
    • Some 32-bit Office add-ins may not be compatible with the 64-bit version

Although Office 2010 64-bit has advantages in terms of speed via its capability to optimize physical memory, etc. it is always preferable to use 32-bit for compatibility reasons.
