I just ported by Tortoise SVN installation from Windows XP over to Windows Vista. I finally got it to install, by using the MSI "Run as administrator" reg file trick posted in an earlier discussion in this forum.

Now, however, when I try to export a repository (via right-click -> "SVN Checkout") and I punch in the URL of what I think my local repository directory is, I get the error message "this is not a valid URL." It won't even let me browse for the URL. What gives?

I'm using Tigris Tortoise SVN repository on Windows 7 to backup revisions of my web design files. I've been using this program since back on Windows XP and it has saved me many a headache from having to rewind a couple changes back or restore an old site look.

However, now that the program is on Windows 7 (64-bit), I'm running into a bit of a problem: and that is, the overlay icons that show me when a file has been changed aren't updating.

In this particular example I'm trying to see which Drupal files have changed - that is, so that when I upgrade I only need to replace the changed files (I save, for example, the older Drupal version to SVN, and then copy and paste the new version over it, with the idea that the overlay icons will show me at quick glance which files have changed.)

Unfortunately, the icons aren't refreshing, so I'm missing out on some files that have changed, but according to their icon haven't. Is this a Tortoise SVN issue or a Windows 7 problem?

I've been running Tortoise SVN for years to keep track of changing versions of my files, and it seems that recently, the "overlay icons" have been getting worse and worse. Note the icons themselves, mind you - but the display of them.

To the point where in the last update - to Tortoise SVN version 1.6.8 (Build 19260 - 64 bit), the icons no longer appear at all. I've tried all the suggestions listed on the Tortoise website - restarting my PC, making sure the "fixed disk" option is checked in the settings - all to no avail.

I even checked the Windows registry to see if the overlay icon entries were in there - they are.

I was just about to search for an alternative SVN software, but it seems Tortoise is still the go to choice. Does anyone have any ideas as to what else I might try to get my Tortoise SVN icons back?
