This Connection is Untrusted

I keep getting "This connection is untrusted" errors in Firefox when trying to access my cPanel via SSL (https://example.com/cpanel). The secure pages work fine when I'm accessing my shopping cart and checking out (which is the important thing, otherwise my customers couldn't be purchasing my products!)

However, it would also be nice to know that my backend environment (cPanel, etc.) is secure, and be able to access it as such. Any ideas how to resolve this?

FYI, the complete error message given by Firefox is:

    This Connection is Untrusted

You have asked Firefox to connect securely to vps.example.com:2083, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.

Normally, when you try to connect securely, sites will present trusted identification to prove that you are
going to the right place. However, this site's identity can't be verified.

    What Should I Do?

If you usually connect to this site without problems, this error could mean that someone is trying to impersonate the site, and you shouldn't continue.

    Technical Details

vps.example.com:2083 uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is not trusted because it is self-signed.

    (Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)

    I Understand the Risks

If you understand what's going on, you can tell Firefox to start trusting this site's identification. Even if you trust the site, this error could mean that someone is
    tampering with your connection.

Don't add an exception unless you know there's a good reason why this site doesn't use trusted identification.

    Hi Sam,

cPanel services including FTP, Webmail, and WebHost Manager (WHM) are run by your host name, which appears to be using a self-signed certificate. As long as you're accessing your own website this shouldn't be cause for alarm. But just to be safe, you'll probably want to check with your hosting provider that everything is in order with your certificate.

If this error is annoying, you can always purchase a signed certificate from your hosting provider or a third party. These typically go for $50/ year and up.

Hmmm, I'm getting the same warning, am paying a whopping $90 for a shared server and why doesn't host give me a free signed certificate?

You're paying $90/ month for a shared server? How about switching to a VPS (Virtual Private Server)? Dreamhost.com offers some good ones. Use coupon code CWD50 for a discount.
