Is Windows Update KB976902 Necessary?

The description for Update for Windows 7 for x64-based systems (KB976902) is "Install this update to enable future updates to install successfully on all editions of Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2. This update may be required before selected future updates can be installed. After you install this item, it cannot be removed."

So it sounds like the update is not necessary at this time, but will be in the future to support other updates? If that's the case, why is it being released already? I'm a little bit weary of installing updates that aren't critically necessary, especially when it says it can't be removed!

    Any thoughts?

I'm skipping this update myself for now. Heard some horror stories about it messing things up. My rule of thumb is - if it ain't broke - don't fix it Besides, MS mentions themselves the updates this is for haven't even been released yet. If/ when that time comes they'll probably have a more stable version of update KB976902 anyways.

Agreed. In fact I think I read somewhere that Microsoft released this back in October 2010, but then pulled it because it had been prematurely released. So why is it back now? Has anything changed? I still don't see a Windows 7 update (such as a service pack) that needs this...
