Windows - show or hide file extensions?

    I can't remember how to hide or show file extensions in Windows Vista? I'm trying to create a .reg file to remove the "shortcut" text from icons but Windows keeps adding the .txt file extension at the end - ie. .reg.txt, so the file won't run the registry editor.
